Seasonal pool care

How should you prepare your pool for the season? Which measures should you take when going away on holidays? And how should you winterise your pool at the end of the season?

In this section you will find information about:

1. Spring cleaning
2. Start of the season
3. Holiday treatment
4. Winterising

Spring cleaning

At the beginning of the season, we recommend to clean your pool with Decalcit Super. This highly effective, viscous cleaner has been specifically designed to remove calcium deposits and other debris without damaging the pool surfaces. It is applied with a brush or scouring pad and rinsed off with water after cleaning.

For the cleaning of liner and polyester pools, Adisan is best suitable.

Start of the season

For the winterisation of outdoor pools, swimming pool manufacturers recommend to leave them filled with water. Therefore at the start of the season the question is whether to reuse the "winterised" water, or fill the pool with fresh water.

For outdoor pools, BAYROL recommends to change the water every year, for indoor pools a water change every 2 - 3 years should be sufficient. The best time to change the water of your outdoor pool is in spring, as you will carry out a thorough spring clean anyway.

If the pool is empty and free of of debris and calcium deposits, check the filter and then refill with fresh water.

Firstly check the pH level and adjust between 7.0 and 7.4, then carry out a basic disinfection, respectively a shock treatment using Chlorifix or Chloriklar®. After three days you can start with your chosen treatment method, and continue with a regular maintenance regime.

Please remember that the pH level will rapidly increase in the first few days after refilling your pool. For this reason the level should be checked more often and if necessary lowered by applying pH-Minus.

Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

Holiday treatment

If your pool is not fitted with a dosing system for automatic treatment, and you will be away on holidays for more than 8 days, special measures should be taken to ensure sufficient disinfectant and algae prevention is present in the water during your absence.

Ideally, the pool should be covered with a suitable pool cover. The circulation pump should continue to run on a daily basis, however, half the usual time.

We recommend that prior to your departure, you carry out the following steps:

For sand filters:
Backwash the filter, check the pH level and if necessary adjust between 7.0 and 7.4. Add one Multilong® cartridge per 50 m³ into the skimmer. One Multilong® will last for approximately two weeks.
Alternatively and depending on your pool size, place several Chlorilong® tablets in a dosing floater. By reducing the width of the dosing slits, you can disinfect the pool water for up to 3 weeks. Please do not forget to dose double the usual amount of Desalgine® or Desalgine® Jet.

For cartridge filters:
Clean the filter, check the pH level and if necessary adjust between 7.0 and 7.4. Depending on your pool size, place several Chlorilong® tablets in a dosing floater. By reducing the width of the dosing slits, you can disinfect the pool water for up to 3 weeks. Please do not forget to dose double the usual amount of Desalgine® or Desalgine® Jet.

Even if the water visually looks good after returning from holidays, you should carry out a thorough backwash of the sand filter, respectively a thorough rinse of the cartridge filter.

Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

Winterising

For the winterisation of outdoor pools, swimming pool manufacturers recommend to leave them filled with water. The advantages: Water in the pool counteracts the pressure of soil against pool walls, or prevents the pool from rising due to too high ground water levels in spring. Furthermore, the filled pool is less exposed to seasonal weather conditions, and is less likely to be damaged by objects falling in.

The additional advantage of using a winteriser such as Puripool® Super: calcium deposits and the formation of algae growth is inhibited from the start, making spring cleaning easy and effortless.

Info: Even after having dosed Puripool® Super into the water, you can still use your pool without any problems.

How to prepare your pool for the winter:

  • Check the pH level and if necessary adjust between 7.0 and 7.4.
  • Carry out a shock treatment with Chlorifix, Chloriklar® or Chloryte®, and with the circulation pump running. This will ensure that the pipework system is disinfected as well.
  • Lower the water level to below the inlets.
  • Dose the appropriate amount of Puripool® Super evenly throughout the pool.
  • Drain the external pipework.
  • Add an empty plastic container or a piece of wood to compensate for the ice pressure in the pool
  • If possible use a special pool cover to protect the pool.

Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
