Using excess water at the end of the pool season

During the summer, pool owners have taken good care of their pool water. Whilst preparations for hibernation are well under way, it does not mean that pool water becomes useless or has to be disposed of. Our expert provides tips on how pool water can be recycled to improve our carbon footprint.

Above ground pool owners have the choice: they can either dismantle the pool or leave it assembled and simply lower the water level. Owners of in ground pools should leave the water in the pool and just lower the level below the inlets. This counteracts the pressure of soil against the pool walls and prevents the pool from rising at too high ground water levels in spring. Excess water can for instance be used to irrigate the garden. Dependent of the weather conditions, water care products decompose automatically. Before using pool water for irrigation purposes, the free chlorine value should be below 0.3 mg/l, in order to avoid damage of sensitive plants. This value can easily be determined by using the BAYROL Quicktest test trip or the BAYROL Pooltester chlorine. If it has fallen below 0.3 mg/l, the water may be used to irrigate plants and flowers. It is also possible to store the water in a cistern to help reducing the consumption of tap water.

Algaecides such as Desalgine will neutralise when getting in touch with negatively charged soil and in consequence loose their chemical properties. Sulphates contained in pH Minus, pH Plus and carbonates are harmless, since they are a natural component of water already. The same is valid for aluminium sulphate contained in flocculants, which is one of the most commonly found components of the lithosphere. Again the use of water for irrigation purposes is no problem at all.

Please note: these recommendations are only valid for original BAYROL products. Pool water must never be drained in water containing fish.

Tip: Draining the water makes pool cleaning much easier. Before winterising the pool, we recommend to particularly remove dirt and debris from the water line. This ensures a simpler cleaning process in spring and it prevents spots on liners. BAYROL Bordnet spray cleans the water line reliably and efficiently.
